No, this blog post won’t be about the fantastic Nsync song which its title references, but rather a look into the culture of teen pop stars promising their viriginity until their married through public announcements or through wearing promise rings. Recently, at MTV’s Video Music Awards, host Russell Brand poked fun at the Jonas Brothers for choosing to wear the rings representing their abstinence.

Our three favorite perfectly coiffed bros certainly didn’t start this trend. In my recent memory, both Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Simpson all made claims that they were going to abstain from sex until marriage. From the looks of it, it seems that Jessica Simpson was the only one who kept that promise. Apparently there is even a new tell all book by Lynne Spears

Really though?

So awhile back, I was watching E!News and they did a glowing piece on Selena Gomez. Apparently Disney’s new darling was working with a program promoting voter registration for young adults at a mall. Sounds great, right? I thought so too. Until they asked her if she would ever consider running for president. Her answer was “I don’t know if i could be a woman president, I’m kind of emotional. but i think it’d be fun to be a first lady.”

I know that she didn’t say that no woman could be president but It’s still heartbreaking to see a girl who is adored by millions of young girls can say something that pushes the women’s movement way back.

This is the kind of behavior I would expect from Brooke Hogan but I had higher expectations for Selena.
